I love the idea! But Iget the error message 503 when I try to customize a template!?

Thierry Ruiz said...

Thanks alot all for your comments. These last 2 days, the site has been spolighted by many blogs and is geting very popular. It's now on del.icio.us top ten and I have to face a huge trafic. The server has to be restarted sometimes. That's why you get errors. I'm really sorry for that, I do my best to fix the issues... and find some time to add new templates.

Thanks again.

Hi, this is a great tool indeed! Could you please just explain to me how do you apply a chosen colour scheme (in template tuner window) to the template? When I pick the colour scheme and save my choice (and apply the changes) nothing happens. Maybe it's not the way it works? Thank you!

Thierry Ruiz said...

Hi

Choosing a color scheme will not change the colors of your template automatically. You have to change the color with the "colors..." button for each element you want to modify. In the color chooser popup, you retrieve the colors of selected color scheme. Then apply your changes.

Hope this help.

Hi
when you down load the template it does not come with the boxes or lay out as shown. Can you let me know how to get these files.
Great tool.

Thierry Ruiz said...

Can you precise ? Do you mean that once unzip the template does not display correctly in your browser ? What is the version of your browser ?

Diane said...

It's a great idea and I would have used it if I could have replaced the template header image with a custom logo instead. But thanks for your efforts to make a free tool!

Thierry Ruiz said...

Diane,

Thanks for your comment. I actually plan to offer the possibility to add a custom logo.
Meanwhile you can do it with few effort. For that you have to uncheck the "show title" setting in the "container header" section. Then it will not render the title. Once download you can edit the banner in a software like Photoshop to add your custom logo.

Hi Alex,

So good to have comments like yours. I'm glad you found it useful for your website. Good job to you !

hey great, really great... but i think it's very difficult for me to do it, I mean, i already made my template and i downloaded but I don't know how to put it on my blogger :s

I have uploaded the CSS document you attached in that document but blogger makes me an error... well i hope you (or someone able to do this)can help me,

the thing with the logo would be great too... why don't you put some announcements to eran money, it would be easier for us to help you.

thanks a lot

Thierry Ruiz said...

Hi Ró. Thanks for your comment.
You noticed that dotemplate does not generate code for Blogger or any other target platforms. It generates generic code you have to modify by yourself to make it useable with your blogging or hosting platform. It's among the evolutions I plan to implement.

First of all...great tool and very easy to use with the available templates.

I used it to create a website but cannot seem to get the images to show when I upload to my host.

Taking a close look at the source code I notice there are no lines indicating where the images go in the template so they show on the page.

Right now I have text only. Not showing are background, header, footer, etc.

I will be happy to email a text file of my new site so someone can show me how it is to be edited to show the images.

Any help will be appreciated or I have to abandon this effort. I am at a loss as to how to make it work.

Rest assured, if this works, I will donate because I intend to use more of your templates for several niche sites I am developing.

Thanks
Jim

Jim DeSantis said...

First...thanks Thierry for the response.

The way I was uploading to my host is why my images were not showing.

When uploading to host using Cpanel FTP I found that, after editing to suit my needs:

1) Do not open the CSS folder before uploading. Upload the folder as is.

2) Upload the index.html as is.

It works now.

see http://www.autographs.jdanswers.com

As promised - I have donated to keep this great tool alive and expanding.

I really like the template designs and it is a great idea but I get a script error when I try to customize one. Line error something about e is null but i also get a my time has expred message also

Thierry Ruiz said...

Hi Debbie,

Some people reported me this error. It normally happens after 20 minutes without using the tool, when your user session expires.

Can you send me your e-mail adress so we can discuss about it.

Thanks.

How is it looking with that todo? And what kind of CMS are you planning?

Thierry Ruiz said...

I just delivered a new version which includes a banner uploader, a banner library and some other cool stuffs.

As I mentionned in the TODO list the next milestone is to propose content management features. You will be abble to create and host a complete website. This means create and edit pages with text and images, manage the navigation... All this in a very easy and intuitive way.

Carlo Morán said...

i need the template in format xml, program only gives css templates , :( i need to know how does it works

Thierry Ruiz said...

Papito0, doTemplate generates a generic index.html file and required CSS resources. It does not generate the XML for blogging platform like blogger, if this is what you mean. If not please precise your question by writing me directly at thierry.ruiz( at )gmail.com

Anonymous said...

Great, simply great. Thanks for banner uploader, and, when you could finish tjat CMS? I am sorry to still bother, but i simply cannot wait.

Thierry Ruiz said...

Hey! Thanks for the comment. Well I'm working hard on the CMS. I'll try to deliver it by mid July, but I cannot promess, it's quite a lot of work. Anyway words like yours really help.

Anonymous said...

Well, you deserve it; you've had to put a lot of hard work into it. I'm so very grateful...

But, could you specify your CMS? Will it be simple, only adding pages, subpages, texts etc., or something more "sophisticated", with polls, users login etc.?

And, I'm not sure, but can I post my ideas here? I think that one very importnant thing is some kind of "news system", when, in admin, you could add news to the index or more pages. And you could choose the look of the "news table, container etc." in teh Template Tuner.

Well, i hope I don't request too much ;-)

As I already said, your template generator is great.

And the last thing - sorry for my english; I'm from Central Europe and I'm writing with wrist bones broken on my left arm ;-)

Thierry Ruiz said...

The CMS I'm working on will be simple at the begining. Just to create a simple website and download it. And Later I will propose the hosting, and more advanced functions to registered users. So your feedback is precious to me, all ideas and suggestions will be considered.

Anonymous said...

So that CMS wont be downloadable and usable on your pages in the future, you will only create the pages and download it.

Thierry Ruiz said...

Contact me to my email so I can answer your questions more precisely.

Anonymous said...

Is there a way to add more templates, my own template or templates ?

Thierry Ruiz said...

Hi Karan,

No, it's impossible to add a template. There is no automatic way to make user submited templates customizable
by doTemplate graphic engine. I have to rework the template myself to make it customizable.

Anonymous said...

I made my template and saved it.
How would I go about putting it on my freewebs site? I'm confused on actually how to use it

Thierry Ruiz said...

Hi Carrotcake,

doTemplate does not generate templates for Freewebs.
You have to tweak the HTML and the styles.css file to install it on your Freewebs account. It's possible as you can see there

http://www.freewebs.com/darooze/

But you need some HTML/CSS skills to make it work.

Hope this help.

Ozgur said...

this is great work, i really liked it.

however, as far as i see, all templates are two-column and have a navigation panel on the right side.
doesn't this decrease the number of possible templates that can be generated using your tool?

i think, before dealing with cms features, adding some different templates (maybe even some crazy ones) would increase your generator's quality a lot.

anyway, i must admit that this is a great tool!

Thierry Ruiz said...

Hi Ozgur,

Thanks for your feedback. I understand your point. The next version will provide possibility to choose between right side and left side menu. But some users are waiting for CMS features too.
I do my best to satisfy all requirements, but it's really a mater of time. Donations so far do not even cover my hosting fees, so I'll have someday to provide advanced features under payment.

Anyway, your feedback is precious to me.

I am looking for a way to move sidebar from right to left in http://www.dotemplate.com/dt/selectTheme.do?name=tpl4a2 this template. I have already changed to bg.jpg picture, but I cannot find a way how you are positioning the sidebar. Thanks

Append the following content at the end of styles.css

#main {
float: right;
margin: 0px 20px 0px 0px ;
}

#sidebar {
float: left;

Salut Thierry,

Justine

Thierry Ruiz said...

J'y travaille.

Without doubt the classiest website generator on the internet. Brilliant.

Crome said...

Thierry, why can I not see the images the generator creates when I open up the file in Dreamweaver? If I want to replace those images, how do I do it?

Thierry Ruiz said...

Hi, thanks for the comment. The images are located under css directory if you want to change it. That's probably why they are not visible with Dreamweaver.

Anonymous said...

Can I change the text?

Thierry Ruiz said...

No, you can only change the design not the text. This is not the scope of such tool. But may be a feature to implement in future releases.

Anonymous said...

Bonjour Thierry,

Merci encore.

Justine

Anonymous said...

Justine

Thierry Ruiz said...

Salut Justine,

Crome said...

Thierry, you have outdone yourself. Brilliant stuff.

Thierry Ruiz said...

Thanks a lot ! I'm glad you like it. I have to enrich the catalog now.

Crome said...

Hi Thierry

I have tested your new template generator and have picked up this: I cant change the colour of the first word or change the word itself in the banner. the second word I can change the colour but not the word itself. sometimes i can change the text and colour of the slogan, othertimes not. Hope this input helps.

I stumbled across this while looking for good GWT demos. Apart from being an excellent GWT showcase app it has been very useful. I had the essence of this in a hand full of XML/XSL/SVG scripts, but nothing nearly as useful as this application. Well done. I've sent the requested $10 for the first link-free use of a template. I hope to send more your way soon! Keep up the excellent work.

@Hectique,
I had a try but could not reproduce this problem. It may depend on your browser version. Which one and which version did you use ? Thanks a lot, your feedback is precious to me.

Unknown said...

I love this template generator so much that I just left a donation.

I had one little idea about a simple feature. If possible could you make the backgrounds for the headers available with and without the people. Just the subtle lines and waves would be a nice option. You could possibly make the available for download as png's for people to make their own custom banners.

Thierry Ruiz said...

@Dan

Hi Dan, many thanks. These features are actually available in the new version in preview (I'm not sure you used it). This new version allows to hide show resize move and upload the foreground and background images.

The download zip will also soon contains this images as separate materials.

Thanks again.

I create a template with your site but i can't use it for blogger.com!
why?

Thierry Ruiz said...

@Master

Because doTemplate does not generate templates specific to Blogger. Blogger use a specific format which is not (yet) supported by doTemplate.
Sorry for that.

Master said...

ah ok! thank you! great job

Thank you so much for this tool.

I can't figure out why the font style changes for me in my view when uploaded on the net. At first glance I see the font the way it's supposed to be (redish), then it quickly switches over to another font, size and color (blackish) on the headings 1 and 2. I see it's red on my computer before uploaded.

I'm stumped and far from pro :)
